Si pensa che il nome Palawan sia stato dato dai cinesi nel IX secolo che si riferivano ad essa come a Pa-Lao-Yu, o “terra del porto sicuro e bello”. Altri credono che il nome provenga dalla parola indiana “Palawans”, cioè “territorio”; altre fonti invece indicano che il nome “Palawan” è una derivazione del termine spagnolo “Para Agua”, perché la forma dell’isola maggiore dell’arcipelago ricorda un ombrello chiuso.
